Abstract:
Locked-in syndrome is a term used to describe patients who are partially or entirely paralyzed butfully conscious. According to prior research, those patients report a high quality of life and desire toremain active in their society and families. Hence, in this paper, we propose a system for enhancingsocial interactions of locked-in patients with their families and friends with the goal of improvingtheir overall quality of life. Our system has three main components: a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)based state-of-the-art P300 speller, augmented-reality glasses, and a screen that shares the view ofthe proxy with the patient. This setting targets both the patients and the caretakers: (1) it allowsthe patient to experience the outside world through the eyes of the proxy and (2) it creates a way ofactive communication between the patient and the proxy to convey needs and advice. In order tovalidate our approach, we showcased a demo of our prototype and conducted a set of interviews thatdemonstrate the potential benefit that it can have for affected patients. «
