Mainstream electric propulsion (EP) systems use high purity xenon as propellant. The increasing number of EP applications, and in particular the growing interest in large constellations of low cost small satellites where the high cost of xenon may become critical technology discriminator, is increasing the interest in alternative propellants. The aim of this research project is to investigate the impact of alternative propellants on the lifetime and system performance of EP systems.
