So far, their performance is only indirectly assessed as a main cement constituent in Portland-composite cements. This paper briefly addresses the existing approach to durability assessment of concrete and then uses experimental results to demonstrate the potential of calcined clays as examples for a calcined Amaltheen clay and a metakaolin produced as an industrial by-product. The investigations focus on chloride penetration behavior and carbonation. On the one hand, the calcined clays significantly lower the chloride migration coefficient compared to the reference mixture. On the other hand, although the carbonation depth increases, it is in the range comparable to that known for other Portland composite cements. These properties could already be taken into account with concept of equivalent concrete performance and calcined clays could be used as high performance concrete admixtures}, note = {}, institution = {Universität der Bundeswehr München, Fakultät für Bauingenieurwesen und Umweltwissenschaften, BAU 3 - Institut für Werkstoffe des Bauwesens, Professur: Thienel, Karl-Christian}, }
